Lebkuchen (German: [ˈleːpˌkuːxnˌ]), Honigkuchen (German: [ˈhoːnɪçˌkuːxn̩], 'honey cakes') or Pfefferkuchen (German: [ˈpfɛfɐˌkuːxn̩], 'pepper cakes') are honey-sweetened German cakes, moulded cookies or bar cookies that have become part of Germany's Christmas traditions. They are similar to gingerbread.
Nürnberger Lebkuchen is a protected designation of origin for gingerbread from Nuremberg, since 1 July 1996 as a protected geographical indication (PGI) is recognised under European law. Accordingly, such Gingerbread may only be offered as "Nürnberger Lebkuchen" on the territory of the city of Nuremberg were prepared.
